Reintroducing Rebecca Lily

A year-long effort has finally come to fruition: the launch of my new branding, and relaunch of my website! I’m so thrilled with the new look and feel and hope you are too. This space was designed to be clean, restful and timeless, just like the products that are offered here, and my new logo is a nod to the delicate things in nature that inspire me. The colors are reminiscent of the sea, which has been an influential part of my life since making my home in Co. Kerry, Ireland, and now in coastal New England.

Partnering with me in this endeavor and helping me to realize my vision is the very talented Emma of Emmadime (Oakland, CA). She was so amazing to work with, how effortlessly she brought all of my ideas and concepts into reality. And besides her obvious talent as a designer, she is just an incredibly nice person. I’m so delighted with what she has created and it reaffirms to me how wonderful the outcome can be when you work with the very best people.

To celebrate the relaunch, for the next 5 days I am offering 30% off all of my sets to both new and existing clients (February 12th – February 17th). If you’ve been thinking about trying a product, or adding to your existing collection, this would be a great opportunity to take advantage of the discount pricing. I will also be giving away a beautiful new ONA camera bag to one lucky person who retweets my relaunch announcement – your choice of a Palma in black, or the Brixton in smoke.

I would like to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to my husband Johnny for all of his help, encouragement and patience while this project was underway. A sincere thank you to all of my clients and friends who have supported Rebecca Lily with their business, shared their images with me, published reviews and results, talked about the products with their friends or took the time to write me a thank you note. And very special thanks too to Anne Paar for the stunning opener image on my home page, and to all of the other talented photographers who contributed their beautiful images for this site. I’m truly grateful for all of the positive energy that’s surrounded me since I began this business in 2009. Seven years later, this work still brings me so much joy – and the people I have been privileged to know through it have enriched my life.

Thank you.

February seemed like a fitting month to feature the reflective work of photographer Evan Schwanke. Evan’s light and shadow filled images carry themes of home, family and a simple life connected to the great outdoors. Focused on capturing the essence of his daily life with his Leica M9, he shares his visual diary on his cleverly named Tumblr, Home on the Rangefinder.

“I am a rangefinder shooter based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. After shooting film for many years, I have transitioned into a Leica M9. If you would have told me that would be my current stance 5 years ago, I would have thought you were crazy. It’s true, film is better. Unfortunately, it’s also not cheap or practical in everyone’s situations. Give me my Leica and some Rebecca Lily III presets, and I could convert you as well. Previously, I had my sights set on building a photo business and transitioning into that full time. With the way things work, I have a job and really enjoyed my freedom of shooting for my enjoyment and not as work. Over the years I have turned the camera on my daily life and documenting every day. I used to use TLR’s, SLR’s, large formats, small formats, half formats, instants, ect., but the rangefinder was always my choice. This type of camera fits my daily life perfectly. Half the time I don’t even know it’s hanging around my neck. My first goal is to live our life, the camera is just there to capture a single instance of that. We live in an amazing area in Wisconsin. We are right off the bay of Green Bay and only 30 minutes from the coast of Lake Michigan. If we travel an hour north, we will be in what is referred to as the “cape cod” of the Midwest with light houses and historic houses, an hour south, we are at beautiful white sand beaches. Let’s not forget that we are in Titletown, USA and live in probably one of the most unique, heartfelt cities in the country. On a given Sunday, our city of 100,000 people hosts another 85,000 at this little historic site known as Lambeau Field (you may have heard of this :) ) and the area transforms into a different world. I didn’t even mention the cheese or beer yet! Our family has a huge sense of adventure and try to travel and explore every chance we have available. I just get the pleasure of documenting our lives along the way.”

Pete Halvorsen is a commercial and travel photographer based out of Los Angeles, California. Pete and his work have been featured by the likes of ABC’s Nightline, Good Morning America, Elle Magazine, InStyle, the Getty Museum, Details Magazine and the Los Angeles Times.

Pete grew up in the vineyard country of Northern California but moved to the beaches of Southern California after receiving his Film degree. He spent the next few years in the entertainment industry, learning how to tell stories with images. His photography combines the patience of wine making with the ever-changing tide of the ocean. Combining art with commerce, Pete has been able to work on international campaigns for brands such as TOMS, Leica, Microsoft, Four Seasons, Toyota, GAP and Yahoo.

His creative voice away from the camera has also been instrumental in this new phase of digital advertising. Pete has worked as a consultant with ad agencies and Instagram: Business. In 2013 Pete produced one of the first videos Instagram published through their application.

One of Pete’s passion projects was when he traveled to Malawi, Africa, shooting for a non-profit group. Pete’s original assignment was to document the group’s efforts in helping to empower and educate 170 orphans of the Mtendere village. However, when word came that some of the children wanted to learn photography, Pete asked to teach mobile photography to some of the children. Pete partnered with VSCO to pilot a program that taught the children basic photography skills while enabling them to express themselves creatively through images.

Named one of the top travel photographers by Business Insider, Pete has travelled to 20+ countries in the last 3 years shooting for non-profit organizations, 5-star luxury brands and travel bureaus. When he’s not running to catch a flight, he can be found enjoying the beach in Los Angeles with his wife and 2 kids.

“I’ve really enjoyed using Rebecca Lily Pro Set III because it’s created a new type of style that I hadn’t used before. I’m always looking to evolve in my creative style and recently I find myself drawn to the Bright Color and Pastels for my beach shots. Usually with presets I find myself tweaking them quite a bit after applying them, with these I find they’re really spot on after the first edit.” – Pete Halvorsen

Joshua Allen Harris was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he went on to study graphic design and illustration. After moving to New York City in 2004, he had the opportunity to attend the School of Visual Arts to pursue a degree in Fine Art. In 2012 Joshua began exploring photography. This medium allowed him to integrate all of his creative interests and since then he has enjoyed pursuing both commercial and personal projects. He currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Cameron.

“I am really impressed with the color rendering of these presets along with the subtle hues. The overall look of the color and tones feels balanced and visually inviting. My first go-to preset is Apricot – I usually underexpose my digital files so the bright highlights in this preset work well for me. The warm orange/pink I think feels like the late summer nights, and maybe since that’s what I’ve been shooting recently, it just fits perfectly. I also use Avalon a lot. For me, I find the black and whites to be the real standouts – so much punch and dynamic range. Having a hard time picking a favorite.

As far as these filters emulating a film look they definitely do. But I think they take it a step further, building off the film aesthetic but delivering something a little more special and fine-tuned and definitely more personal. I find each preset a wonderful starting off point on a new color narrative. I’m looking forward to further explore and think about them while I’m shooting – combining a better understanding and flow working and considering both pre- and post-editing.”

Cindy Loughridge is a lifestyle photographer based in San Francisco, CA, specializing in editorial, portrait, and wedding photography. Over the past 10 years, Cindy has documented her everyday, often shooting “nothing in particular” in order to find novel ways to turn the unremarkable into something more, and then applying those ideas to her client work.

Cindy credits online and local photography communities with helping her to hone her craft and to see more, and differently. She shoots both film and digital, and has a particular fondness for polaroids. Her photographic inspirations include Saul Leiter, Uta Barth, William Eggleston, and Jacques-Henri Lartigue.

“Rebecca Lily Pro Set III presets have been my go-to presets for my digital workflow and help me blend the look and feel of my digital images seamlessly with my film images. The tones are absolutely beautiful. Soft, bright, and with the right amount of contrast to re-create the look of film. I tend to favor the pastel presets – Apricot and Candy, La Femme – and the Audrey B&W. The Vignetting | Outer Glow tool is magical. I can’t wait to see what Rebecca creates next.”

I’m thrilled to announce my newest product, Pro Set IV – the most carefully crafted, refined, and beautiful set I’ve ever created!

AppleImage credit: Cody Priebe on Leica Q, one-click edit with Apple.

Pro Set IV is an evolution in my work, not only in the techniques I’m using to make my products better, but in how I see light, color and aesthetic. These are the most beautiful color palettes I have been able to dream into life: the soft pinks and hues of the desert, film-inspired and vintage pastels, rain-washed blues and violets, bright citrus tones, gentle muted browns and much more.

CitrusImage credit: Jason de Plater on Canon 5D Mark III, one-click edit with Citrus.

I’ve designed an amazing collection of vintage presets that incorporate the character of old-school cameras and films, but are subtle enough for professional level work.

EucalyptusImage credit: B. Wed on Nikon D700, one-click edit with Eucalyptus.

I’ve created my first presets especially designed for indoor use, which will make editing all of your indoor shots so much easier.

Indoor CoolImage credit: Cindy Loughridge on Leica M 240, one-click edit with Indoor Cool.

And I’ve expanded on my black & white collection to give you everything you need for every look: bold, edgy and fashion-forward, timeless and classic, matte-vintage, soft and grainy.

BrooklynImage credit: Chris Ozer on Sony A7R II, one-click edit with Brooklyn.

I’m so excited to be able to offer this product to photographers as a tool they can use to attain the best possible results for their creative work, with the simplest, most efficient workflow. Endlessly tweaking presets only takes time away from doing what you really love. Pro Set IV gives you the most fine-tuned controls to date to help make professional level editing quicker and easier.

VineyardImage credit: Chris Ozer on Sony A7R II, one-click edit with Vineyard.

Every preset I design takes people first and foremost into account. You will find the same attention to beautiful skin tones and luminosity, and minimal need for retouch. And for when you want to put that final polish on your image, or you just want to play with your own recipes, there is a brand new toolkit crafted for this set. 40 new tools are at your fingertips, with everything from subtle custom toning, clarity, and a fun new feature – rounded corners.

Pro Set IV has been extensively tested on all camera models including Canon, Nikon, Leica, Fuji, Sony, Hasselblad and Phase One – and you can use it on both RAW and JPG files. For those of you who are invested in earlier sets, you won’’t find anything redundant in Pro Set IV. Every look is fresh and new, and every color palette unique.

DesertImage credit: Jason de Plater on Canon 5D Mark III, one-click edit with Desert.

Special thanks goes to the incredibly talented photographers who shared their images with me for the launch of this set – Chris Ozer, Cody Priebe, Finn Beales, Victoria Wright, Cindy Loughridge, Pete Halvorsen, Jason de Plater, Joshua Allen Harris, Dawn Thomson, Natasja Kremers, Byron Loves Fawn, B. Dust and Dreams Photography is creative duo Elaine van der Merwe-Louwrens and Steph Louwrens of Mpumalanga, South Africa. Having left the corporate world to pursue their passion full-time, they now shoot fine art wedding, portrait, lifestyle and travel photography, raise cattle and berries, and keep horses on their farm in the African bush. This is their story.

“Steph and I lived in the bush for many many years, we were passionate about wildlife and making a difference. Over time, as the tourist and lodge industry in South Africa exploded, so did our world. The lodge industry became corporate, and being general managers at some of the country’s most luxurious lodges left us feeling somewhat suffocated, drained from the original essence that the bush provided. It left us with no room for creativity, no room for error, no room for breathing. Our souls were being crushed and our hearts were breaking.

We realized that what matters in the end is the life we create in our time, so we both quit our jobs in one day. We waved goodbye to the life we knew for so long, but also to the corporate environment that was draining our creativity.

And so began our journey of living a life well spent, which in our case involves photography and farming. Not only are we wedding, portrait and fine art photographers, but we also raise cattle and strawberries. We now have a life surrounded with what we feel is organic and real, and we get to see our souls come back into our work.

The last year taught us to share our hearts, not only in our photography but in everything we do. Farm living reminds us of all of the privileges that come with staying close to nature.
We have been able to surround ourselves with art in all its forms and have been able to express our deep fondness of life and travel through our photography, poetry and the way we spend our days.

We are developing our unique style every day and felt like we went to the moon and back when we came across Rebecca’s presets when we first started out. For weddings we have a softer approach with pops of colour and hints of pastel, and for our art work we like to do darker, moodier images that evoke emotion and a strong feeling of longing.”

You can find more of Steph and Elaine’s work at Dust and Dreams Photography, on Instagram and on Facebook.

Victoria Wright is a portrait, travel and lifestyle photographer based in the Pacific Northwest. Her work effortlessly combines her keen sense for dramatic light and expansive vistas with a feeling of intimacy: she brings the viewer in close enough to experience the scene, while creating enough distance to understand it.

Victoria wholeheartedly believes that the story is what matters most, and this shines through in every aspect of her creative vision. Through both her personal work and shooting for global brands, including REI, AMEX, and The Wall Street Journal, she continues to tell authentic and compelling stories through photography.

“I’ve been using Rebecca’s presets since I first heard of them a few years ago. They have a timeless feel without being too heavy, and make a great starting point for my edits.

It’s hard to pick favorites, but I keep coming back to Kinfolk, Amethyst, and Limoncello (Pro Set III) and Olive, Green Tea, and Citrus (Pro Set IV).”

Leila Peterson is a London-based photographer drawn to quiet, in-between moments – ones that convey the feeling and story of the subject at the time it was taken. Leila looks for soft light, pastel colours, and minimal, simple scenes.

Originally from Hawaii, Leila moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to work as a designer and shoot weddings. In 2012, she moved to London, where she now captures everything from fine art and editorial to commercial photography.

Photography has been a part of Leila’s life since her parents purchased a SX-70 Polaroid camera to document family stories throughout the 80s and 90s. Leila would use the SX-70 to take photos of flowers, clouds, and the occasional family portrait. In high school, she found solace in the darkroom, spending hours printing and developing. To Leila, photography was more than a release, but a method to express who she was and communicate all the things she felt.

“Rebecca Lily presets are my go-to for editing. I love the soft, subtle tones and brightness these presets provide. They mix my film and digital images perfectly to give my work a cohesive look.

My favourite preset to create pastel, bright tones is Athena V. I like to keep my editing process simple. In Lightroom, I’ll colour balance an image, adjust the brightness and temperature, then add the preset. For photos where I want to preserve the shadows, I like to use Kinfolk II. And finally, I’ll use Johnny III for all of my black and white images, where I can play with the amount of grain and exposure until I’m happy with the results. I definitely recommend these sets to anyone looking to recreate film tones and add subtle adjustments.”

Dawn Thomson is a creative wedding, lifestyle and editorial photographer based in the South Island of New Zealand. Dawn’s work has been featured in Together Journal, Hello May, White Magazine, Nouba and Rock n’ Roll Bride.

Dawn is continuously awestruck by the majesty of the landscapes that surround her. As a photographer, she is drawn to photograph people within these wild landscapes. Soaring peaks, placid hidden lakes, and lush forests give her a canvas on which to capture the stories and emotions she feels compelled to share. Dawn’s mix of warm, earthy tones, dramatic black & whites and epic landscapes evoke a sense of adventurous exploration with a touch of nostalgia and romance.

“I searched for a long time for presets that would emulate the colour, tone and mood of my images that I desired. I was lucky to stumble upon Rebecca Lily’s presets early in my career and to this day they are my go to presets. Rebecca is a master at crafting the subtleties of film. The tones are soft and muted which compliment so well the environment I work in and evoke a painterly effect. I am particularly fond of Pro Set III and Pro Set IV. These presets are now an integral part of my workflow and style.”
